both can be tough armies. imho i believe the eldar need more finess and have a higher learning curve to being a good general with them than the necrons do. also there are alot more unit choices available with the eldar. however even with thier shortcomings and limited units necrons can be a very nasty army to play against if you build a good army and play to your strengths. i've played both (but no longer have my necrons) and like both. perhaps if the rumors are true and the necrons are looking at an update in the next 1-2 years it might be better to wait on them. though thats just a rumor and i can't prove that they are getting an update soon or not.
also personally if you play alot of fun pick up games where your opponents allow forgeworld units then eldar again have many more options available to you than the necrons.

Ziggy, At this point to be honest with you, I believe you really need to sit down and consider your options. I realize you are a new gamer, and being new, you want to try everything. I will at this point implore you to please run some test games using proxy models. Most of us don't mind anyone using proxies (except Andrew, let's face it we all know how he feels on the subject lol). You'll find your army of choice eventually, but I just don't want to see you throw money away on armies that you will only play once or twice and then decide that you don't like their play style. Trust me, it can become daunting, I know because I do it all the time. Ask any of the guys how many armies I've been through just in the time they've been here. Tim can attest to the fact that I've had at least 5 armies since he's been here, of those five, I've sold/traded off two (Tau and White Scars). This doesn't take into account the 20+ other armies I've had over the last 12 years. That's pretty bad, and even I can admit that I have an addiction, but I also have the disposable income to do so. You are young, and I realize you have an allowance. I don't want to see you throw that allowance away on something you won't want in a couple months. Anyways, that's my time on the soapbox, take into consideration what I've said. By no means is this a negative post to you. I realize it takes time for all of us to find our niche, but I'd rather you find yours and be able to spend your hard earned cash on something that will last.
With that said, I really like Necrons for a starters army. They are one the of the easiest starter armies to get, also the Necron Battleforce is crazy good on points per dollar ratio. They are tough due to WBB and will be even better when they get FNP in the new dex, and when run correctly, can be devastating on the playing field. You can almost guarantee that there are some sets that won't change (Warriors, Destroyers, and maybe Heavy Destroyers). So those are some of the things you can purchase without fear of new models coming out. The Heavy Destroyers are a maybe, due to their metal Gun that over balances the stupid model. Necron Lords are a good bet, as the current one all ready has the Res Orb.
As for Eldar, there are so many combos you can use, and unless you balance your force out correctly, you'll get wiped. They are high on the tactics and a very fragile army to play. It's all about Hit and Run with Eldar. They are great at shooting for the most part and some units excel in close combat, but in the end they are still Eldar with T3. If the enemy survives a charge from Howling Banshees you're sure to lose 3-4 in the combat. Farseers are great because of the Seer Stones that makes enemy Psykers roll 3D6 on their tests, which almost always leads to a failure, plus any double 1's/6's are Perils of the warp... So funny. You're spoiled for choice with Eldar, but all of your units specialize at one thing, so you have to balance your choices. If you do go with them, I'd recommend the following units:
Farseer w/ Warlock Retinue or Autarch
Howling Banshees Striking Scorpions -Wave Serpents for these units
Dire Avengers -Wave Serpents Eldar Jetbikes
Fire Prism's
Good luck in making your decision!

hmm good points there gannon. i didn't know he was so new to the hobby and on that kind of restriction. i'd go a step further with the proxy deal depending on how much you have already. i'm not sure with everyone there as i've never met them in person but i can speak from my own experience and style. guys i came into the hobby with and myself love to get new players in the game. it makes things more fun for us. as such we would allow new players to "borrow" one of our armies to play so they could get a feel for them. we dont let them take them home with them but we'll bring an extra army with us to the game store and let them play while we're there. it not perfect if you use one of our lists as you dont make it youself but it gives you a feel for the army. also you could proxy some of the army without bruising too many feelings.
in the end keep one rule in mind. if you proxy ensure that you keep the models straight with what you say they are. thats where most problems with proxies come into play. if you cant keep them straight your opponent feels they are being cheated.
other than that have fun and as gannon said take your time feel out the armies and find the one that fits you before you dive in. this hobby isnt cheap.

Grip, We have a club army that's available to anyone, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone refuse a new player to borrow their army for a game. We've got a good group like that. New blood is the key to growing the hobby.
Ziggy, You're welcome to ask any questions you feel you need to. Like I said before, it was by no means meant to be a negative post to or about you, I just wanted to reign in the Codex jumping so you guys don't get burned out on the hobby before you even get into it. If there's an army you want to try, and one of us has it, just ask man. We'll hook you up.
