Well, the tourney went off as planned. I hope it was enjoyable. A couple of things might have needed improvement, but they will be noted for my future attempts.
A few items to discuss with the Players:
1. GET ARMY BUILDER. If you do not want to get it, then use someone else's! Steve and Brian lost out on 140 points, potentially a big win for Steve and Brian may have faired better.
2. Paint your models?! A month was given for this tournament. Some of you are amazing painters, but are holding back. Tournament Big Winners are more than just strategic and sportsmanlike, they also spend some time painting models. All of you are really good painters and could have taken home the big ticket had you painted more models. Steve I think is a great painter, but skittles squad is going to hold him back in every painting event because it does not match the theme of the army. Andrew is married with a kid, and I didnt expect him to have everything painted. He was selected for a few brush points, but he is an amazing painter and could have taken the whole thing. Chagear, with his modifications and his very amazing blue power weapon/plasma thing going on, might have taken the tournament with another win (he drew twice). Turtle can paint SO well, I forsee painting wins in his future, but he hinders himself with 180 Orc foot-sloggers.
3. Sportsmanship - Something that should always be incorporated in every tournament. Some of you could have used sportsmanship points to be more competitive. Only Eric and Andrew got 5/5/5, with Nick getting 5/4/5 (to my memory). That was a lot of points considered to someone who might have gotten 3/4/3.
4. Army builds - Some players packed a lot of power into a few models (ala myself). You have to realize that this means that once this unit is destroyed, it is a bad day for you. I knew that going into this. I probably wont field that massive bulk ever again, it was usable but not really what I wanted in my army. It was just to test the new update.
5. Tactics:
a. A Horde army (Turtle) may not have had the intended effect. While outnumbering seems awesome, it also means you can get bottlenecked. Personally, I wanted to fight you, and sit down a narrow passage with my entire army and negate your numbers. For assistance on this tactic, watch ,"300."
b. Nids: Not only are Nids tough, but Andrew can actually play them, which makes it even tougher. Lesson, do not fight the swarm lord with less then 5 models. He is guaranteed to kill 5 models. The trygon is guaranteed 5 as well. Doom: Keep your units further then 6 inches apart, but in sight of dooms drop pod area. He will rape you unless you have leadership 10, and still that might hurt. You can go to ground against Doom's effect as well. Trygon can fleet =).
c. Deathwing Termies: Awesome army Nick, but I think the only problem you had was lack of experience fielding this new army. Once you get 5 or 6 more games, I personally think you will be unstoppable.
d. Objectives: While it is cool and all to charge your army out for an objective, this is not necessary. You need to have the objective on the 5th turn. NOT the 2nd turn. You gain no points for having the objective on the second turn. I saw a lot of this. Ignore the objectives until the fourth turn. You just steal away your army if you don't.
e. Going to ground: Read it, do it. Not enough units doing this.
f. Cover your own units. Spreading out along the table looks awesome, but singles your units out to deep strikers. Every unit should have cover from another unit or more if possible. Keep your close combat annihilation unit in the back and safe until they are really needed.
Those are just thoughts for you guys,
As for myself,
1. I was going to repaint the molten tables other sides white, but forgot to. Sorry for that, Roy. However, your opponents ALWAYS had less overall points then you did, which means that you should have had an advantage. Overall, you did end up with alot of points (especially because a few people voted for your paint scheme!)
2. Probably going to lose the special rules. The Night fighting was rough. The Exploding objectives were childish. The Super movement was... well... terrible, especially in a game that has gone all to close combat. The run move did that to 40k. Maybe they will change run in 6th. It just devalues the generic personal weapon.
3. Might do a double elimination bracket. We will see on this one.
4. GW needs better missions.
