str x weapons will state in thier entry in thier codex what to use. for tryanids its the str or a characteristics of the model using it.
for de it says in the splinter weapon entry how to treat them.
usually most strx weapons wound on a certain number and are unable to damage vehicles. for DE this is because of the poison they use.

I don't think there are any units with "immune to poison". I'm sure even the DE have developed a type of anti matter toxin for Daemons.

Rules can be interperted any way. Just know that your splinter rifles wound on 4+. It's all that really matters, don't get too caught up in the mythos, or how things really work. There are plenty of things that just don't make too much sense. Like how the Rhino model carries 10 people, but can't fit one terminator, or how Thunderhawks really fly, or even that Ork weapons work at all...

Agreed. when it comes down the it all thing is this game has 2 definitions. One is the fluff, and the other come after that when the book says "in game terms". Or after a long amount of writing, the book just come out and tells what is does at the END of the descriptor.

You may be confusing mythos with rules once again. Check under special rules. No where does it state that they are immune to poison weapons. Their special rules are Mark of Nurgle (+1T), Fearless, and Feel no Pain. If they were immune to poison weapons, it would be stated here.
