Anyone have any suggestions? I have no idea what I want to play, so I'm trying to work that out.

It depends on what you want. Do you want something you think looks cool or something that you can win with? If it's the first answer then you're probably going to need to borrow the rule book or look at the GW website and find out what you think looks the best. If you just want to learn the rules before you make any commitments to this hobby then I'd suggest you come to a few meetings and try different armies out (any of us will more than likely let you borrow one for a game or two). The first few games are going to be rough on you because there are so many different rules, but I can go through an intro game or two with you if you'd like to help you get your feet under you. There are a lot of Space Marine players for one main reason, they are easy to play. You can make major tactical errors and still come out on top with Space Marines (any flavor). This is mainly due to their save and toughness characteristics. You won't find the same forgiveness with some other armies (Dark Eldar, Eldar).
Best bet, do the research. You'll feel a lot better about your choice and want to do a lot with your army.
